White Bird News: Call ARF for cats; Cinco de Mayo fun this weekend | Community
WHITE BIRD – “Hummingbird is the spirit of pure joy! She is the messenger of beauty and wonder and reminds us to taste the sweet nectar of life.” – anonymous
The hummingbirds are back. Did you know that they are the only birds that can fly back and forth, their wings beat about 70 times per second (200 times per second while diving) and they are the lightest birds in North America, weighing less than two cents (3- 4 grams). Want to know where they got that name? It is after the buzzing sound that its wings produce during flight.
Progressive Bingo is still active every Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm at the Silver Dollar Bar until May 22nd. This month, the selected charity is the YWCA of Grangeville (208-983-0888/www.ywcaidaho.org ). At YWCA, they provide services for primary and secondary child victims, sexual violence, dating violence, and stalking. Each $5 donation will be given to the YWCA this month. There are fun prizes for every game won and a growing prize pool! There is no need to make any purchases to play, just come to have fun, eat, make friends and, of course – Bingo! Chef Mardees will be preparing something fabulous every Wednesday, so don’t eat before!
Cinco de Mayo is a mean nacho holiday. Red’s Kitchen will kick off its Cinco de Mayo celebration on Saturday, May 4. They will offer chicken ($16) or shrimp ($18) enchiladas with rice and Spanish beans, as well as homemade guacamole. Be sure to reserve a table in advance as this special will sell out quickly.
1906 Brews will host a celebration on Sunday, May 5th from 2:30 p.m. They will offer a taco bar with a variety of meats (pulled pork, chicken, steak), custom margaritas, and cornhole on their new patio.
White Bird’s Royal Gem Rebekah Lodge 13 will offer scholarships to four worthy local seniors. On May 5th, at 5pm, a scholarship award ceremony will take place in the IOOF Hall. There will be desserts and drinks for seniors and their families. Congratulations to each of you who are receiving the scholarship! We wish you nothing but the best on your next adventure.
This weekend, three kittens were found by some children in White Bird. The mother was nowhere to be found and the kittens needed care. Payton Trivett and a few others were kind enough to start bottle feeding these babies since they were maybe three weeks old, if that. Payton tried to find them new homes, but had no luck. I, being the animal nut that I am, contacted a neighbor, Susan Schubert, in White Bird, who has a cattery and works with numerous animal rescues from here to the Lewiston/Clarkston areas. Susan immediately said yes when asked if she could help. She contacted the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) in Grangeville, and they said they would accept them. Nareena, who has been part of ARF as a neonatal foster for the past 10 years with her 16-year-old daughter, will care for them until they can place them in homes. Nareena and her daughter have saved more than 220 kittens over the years helping ARF.
There are local programs that trap cats for donation, spay/neuter them, and find them homes. If you have a problem with feral cats, they will provide the traps, food, and schedule veterinary appointments to fix them, vaccinate them, etc. But all of this needs to be coordinated due to surgeries and scheduling. If you have feral kittens, you would want to get them as soon as possible to acclimate them to humans. ARF then partners with McPaws of McCall or the Boise Idaho Humane Society, where they find homes for these cats and kittens, sometimes within hours of dropping them off.
Currently, the only effective methods for preventing unwanted pregnancies in cats are to spay/neuter your cat or keep your cat indoors exclusively. I know many people like their cats outdoors to help alleviate rodent problems; however, we need to do our part to deal with the growing feral cat population. If you are interested in learning more or would like a trap set up in your location, please contact Terri Tackett at 208-451-0380, Lynne Fredrickson at 208-983-6571 (responsible for spay and neuter vouchers), Juli Stevens (regarding feral cats) at 208-507-0816, and/or Nareena (the neonatal foster parent) at 918-500-2567. ARF also needs “barns” for barn cats. If you are interested in tackling barn cats, please contact them. ARF is participating in Idaho Gives from April 28 to May 2.
