Travel Options Announced for Red Line Closure for 3 Months

Metro plans to close the Red Line from Fort Totten to Glenmont starting June 1 for three months. Construction of the Purple Line mezzanine and other works will occur during this closure. Affected stations include Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma.

Metropolitan and regional transportation departments will offer several travel options during the Red Line closure. From June 1 to August 31, free buses will provide express service between Silver Spring and downtown DC. Shuttle buses will run every 4-8 minutes, ensuring frequent connections to closed stations.

The Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will close during construction. Takoma Station will be closed from June 1st to June 29th. During this period, Red Line trains will run every six minutes throughout the day, including during peak hours. After 9:30 pm, trains will continue to run every 10 minutes as usual.

More than 7 miles of bus-only lanes will be added on Georgia Avenue between Glenmont and Silver Spring. Signal timing will be adjusted to prioritize buses and reduce travel time.

Metro will have teams at affected stations to provide information before closure.
