A cat has finally found its forever home after more than 232 days forgotten in a shelter.
Sarina’s journey began when she was taken to the RSPCA West Dorset shelter in Dorchester, UK. Along with her four kittens and another adult cat named Leah, she was discovered in less than ideal conditions, struggling to cope in a flea-infested home where the felines were not being well looked after.
While Leah and the kittens were quickly rehomed, Sarina found herself facing a longer stay, ignored by potential adopters for nearly a year.

“Sarina was at a disadvantage, being an older cat at 7 years old,” said animal care assistant Hannah. News week. “Unfortunately, many people prefer younger cats or kittens, ignoring the fact that older cats may still have many years of love to give. Additionally, being a black and white cat, she faced the stigma associated with less popular coat colors in the adoption world.”
Shy and struggling with life at the shelter, Sabrina was waiting for the right person to come along. However, when people took the time to get to know her, her lovely personality shined through. “She is a very affectionate and friendly cat,” Hannah said. “However, her initial shyness often meant that potential adopters failed to see her true charm during shelter visits. Confident cats are generally adopted more quickly.”
In 2023, 6.5 million animals entered U.S. shelters, according to Shelter Animals Count, a 4% increase compared to 2022 intakes. By the end of 2023, an additional 117,000 dogs and cats were in the system. of animal shelters compared to the same period in the previous year.
About 850,000 animals were euthanized in shelters in 2023, a 15 percent increase compared to 2022. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption drives, spay and neuter programs, and behavioral rehabilitation.
Fortunately, Sarina’s luck changed when she finally found her perfect match and was adopted.
“She has adapted wonderfully to her new home,” Hannah said. “Her owner reported that Sarina likes to cuddle on her lap while they watch TV and follows them from room to room. It’s heartwarming to see her thriving in an environment where she is truly loved and appreciated.”
