Science and music festival Starmus VII will rock Bratislava with a stellar lineup
The biannual Starmus festival kicks off on May 12 with a stellar lineup of guest speakers and artists, including Queen rock legend and festival co-founder Brian May and French composer and performance artist Jean-Michel Jarre.
The festival combines art, music and science to improve scientific communication and “engage humanity in the biggest issues of our time”, according to Starmus. Each edition of the festival has a specific theme and includes lectures, debates, discussion panels, exhibitions, concerts and film screenings, as well as various other events.
The theme of this year’s Starmus festival is “The Future of Our Home Planet”, which brings together more than 50 leading experts in of Climate Changeenvironmental science, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to the Slovak capital, Bratislava, for an ambitious multi-day event, May 12-17, 2024. The star-studded list includes Nobel Prize winners Michel MayorEmmanuelle Charpentier and Kip Thorneastronauts Charlie Duke, Chris HadfieldKathryn Thornton and Garrett Reisman and legendary primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall.

During Starmus, the prestigious Stephen Hawking Winners of the Science Communication Medal will be announced in four categories: Music and Arts, Science Writing, Film and Entertainment, and Lifetime Achievement.
The award was created by Stephen Hawking It is Alexei Leonov, along with Brian May (who is also an astrophysicist) and Garik Israeliian in 2015. It is awarded to individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to science communication. Previous winners of the Stephen Hawking Medal include Jane Goodall, founder and CEO of SpaceX Elon MuskJean-Michel Jarre, Neil deGrasse TysonBrian Eno, Hans Zimmer and the Apollo 11 documentary.
In addition to the main festival, the Starmus Camp and City Program will bring science to the streets with a morning schedule of talks, performances and exhibitions in the heart of Bratislava, the city’s main square, Hlavné námestie. Twelve scientific exhibition stands, as well as presentations, discussion panels and a musical program are available free of charge to the general public.
The seventh edition of Starmus promises a week of inspiring and educational talks, music and hands-on science activities to “educate the next generation of explorers and regenerate the spirit of discovery,” according to Starmus.
