Sam’s Club introducing new AI technology at checkout


Sam’s Club retail shopping centers are introducing a new way to checkout at their stores. The new technology replaces the process of having an employee scan your receipt when you leave. According to Walmart, members were slowed by lining up in the club’s exit area for experts to review receipts and examine items in a member’s cart. Members said they want a faster, more convenient shopping experience and consistently ranked potentially long checkout wait times – especially during busy periods – as the top issue in their shopping experience. Chief Product Officer Todd Garner said that once you pay at the register and start to leave the store, an arc will use AI to take a photo of everything in your cart and determine if there is anything that hasn’t been purchased. By the time they went under that arch to where they got to the door, we can basically match the receipt to the transaction and verify that all the items in the basket were on the receipt,” Garner said. “When we combine scan-and-go technology with our checkout technology, we are essentially creating a no-line, no-stop, no-friction shopping experience.” The retailer’s first application of artificial intelligence and computer vision technology has been successfully deployed in more than 120 clubs since it was first introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The goal is to have this new technology implemented in all 600 Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2024.

“Between the time they go under that arch to where they get to the door, we can basically compare the receipt to the transaction and verify that all the items in the basket were on the receipt,” Garner said. “When we combine the scan technology -and-go with our checkout technology, we are essentially creating a no-line, no-stop, no-friction shopping experience.”

The retailer’s first application of artificial intelligence and computer vision technology has been successfully deployed in more than 120 clubs since it was first unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The goal is to have this new technology implemented in all 600 Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2024.
