Rowing News | Last tickets for Paris: crews prepare for the world rowing final, Olympic and Paralympic qualification regatta
Also dubbed the ‘Last Chance Regatta’, this final qualifying opportunity will see 183 crews competing for the remaining 37 spots (30 Olympic and seven Paralympic).
There are two quota places in each of the Olympic boat classes, with the exception of the men’s and women’s single sculls, which have third place in quota, which will be allocated to the highest ranked NOC who has not qualified any boat in the World Rowing Championships or continental qualification regattas or who is not in the top two classified (regardless of any Olympic boat class) in the FOQR Lucerne. This is due to the reallocation of vacancies from the host country.
For the Paralympic classes, only the first placed team will book their ticket to Paris in the PR1 single sculls and PR3 mixed double sculls, whilst the first two placed teams in the PR2 mixed double sculls and PR3 mixed coxed four sculls will compete for their country at the Games. .
The biggest entries come from the men’s individual sculls, with 31 entries. Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist Kjetil Borch will attempt to qualify for his fourth Games after battling injuries and multiple surgeries in recent years. On the women’s side, 2018 and 2019 world champion Sanita Puspure is back in the singles after competing in the women’s four and women’s double scull throughout the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The women’s lightweight double scull will see current Olympic gold and silver medalists, Italians Rodini and Cesarini and French Tarantola and Bove, looking for the chance to defend their titles. They will face stiff competition from European silver medalists, Greeks Kontou and Fitsiou.
In both the men’s and women’s category eight, four boats will compete in the regatta. Denmark and Italy will attempt to qualify their first women’s eights for the Games, while Austria will do the same on the men’s side.
Lucerne will host the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta for the first time. Brazilian Rene Campos Pereira is the bronze medalist at Tokyo 2020 in the PR1 men’s single scull, but will face Michel Munoz Malagon, from Mexico. Although Munoz Malagon finished first in his continental qualification regatta, he was not given the place due to qualification rules – the PR3 Mexican mixed double sculls also finished first and the national federation had to choose which boat of the two would qualify.
There is no limit to how many crews a nation can qualify through the FOPQR, unlike continental qualification regattas.
