Reed Hastings is going all in on Harris with $7 million donation
- Netflix’s Reed Hastings is donating $7 million to a super PAC supporting Kamala Harris’ presidential bid.
- Hastings told The Information that this is the largest donation he has made to a single candidate.
- Harris’ campaign raised $81 million in 24 hours after Biden’s endorsement on Sunday.
Reed Hastings threw his full support behind Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential bid on Tuesday.
The Netflix co-founder and chief executive donated $7 million to a super PAC linked to Harris, The Information reported.
It was the largest donation he has ever made to a single candidate, he told the outlet.
Representatives for Hastings at Netflix declined to provide further comment on his donation.
Hastings was initially slow to endorse Harris after President Joe Biden ended her race and passed the baton to her.
Hastings posted to Sunday X shortly after Biden’s announcement, writing: “Democrat delegates need to pick a winner in a swing state.”
But Harris quickly gained support within the Democratic Party, securing enough delegates to clinch the nomination on Monday.
She has reached the threshold of 1,976 pledged delegates, according to calculations by CNN, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.
Harris also quickly secured the support of key Democratic figures including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Shortly after Harris secured the Democratic delegates she needed, Hastings congratulated her on X and expressed his support for her 2024 candidacy.
Hastings was one of the Democratic big donors who publicly called for Biden to drop out of the race.
“Biden needs to step aside to allow a strong Democratic leader to defeat Trump and keep us safe and prosperous,” Hastings said in an email to The New York Times, according to a July 3 report.
Billionaires and business leaders have now begun to come out in support of Harris. This includes Alex Soros, son of investor George Soros and head of Soros Fund Management.
“It’s time for all of us to unite behind Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump. She is the best and most qualified candidate we have. Long live the American Dream!” Soros posted on X after Biden’s announcement.
Melinda French Gates also endorsed Harris, citing the vice president’s record of supporting abortion rights.
And while the endorsements are flowing in, Harris’ campaign has also been raising a lot of money from donors. She secured a record $81 million in donations in the first 24 hours of her campaign.
