Praggnanandhaa x Magnus Carlsen again, this time at the home of the world number 1, in Norway | Chess News
Norway Chess, one of the world’s most prestigious chess tournaments held annually in Stavanger, will see Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa in the six-player open category, taking on some of the world’s biggest names such as world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen and the current world champion. Ding Liren.
Pragg, 18, is not the only Indian competing in the event: he is also joined by Indian grandmasters Koneru Humpy and Vaishali Rameshbabu, who will compete in the women’s section of Norway Chess.
Pragg will face some of the biggest names in chess: world number 1 Magnus Carlsen, current world champion Ding Liren, world number 2 Fabiano Caruana, world number 3 Hikaru Nakamura and world number 6 Alireza Firouzja.
Koneru and Vaishali, meanwhile, will be part of an elite field that includes women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, world No. 4 Lei Tingjie, world No. 7 Anna Muzychuk and Pia Cramling.
The event has brought together some of the biggest names in the world since its creation in 2013.
This year, the biggest attraction of Norway Chess will be seeing 18-year-old Praggnanandhaa face Magnus Carlsen in the classic format. The pair met in the longest version of the sport at the FIDE World Cup final, where Praggnanandhaa lost to Magnus Carlsen but secured his place in the Candidates chess tournament.
Before Norway Chess, Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen recently competed against each other in Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland, where the world number 1 won the title despite losing to Pragg on the penultimate day. After the defeat to Praggnanandhaa, Magnus Carlsen said that his “nervous system had just collapsed”.
Norwegian Chess Format
Norwegian Chess will still take place in a double round robin format. Classic games will have a time control of 120 minutes with a 10-second increment after move 40.
There is also a provision for Armageddon, where white has 10 minutes, black has 7. After move 41, there is a 1 second increment.
Norwegian Chess Scoring
Players earn three points for a classic win.
Players will also earn 1.5 points for an Armageddon win and 1 point for an Armageddon loss.
