One thing I love about summers in New York is going on a trip. Give me some sun and warm weather, and I’ll put the top down on the convertible and be on my way.
Apparently, I’m not alone when it comes to travel plans for New Yorkers, at least according to a recent survey from The Vacationer. More than 1,000 Americans participated in the survey and more than 75% of U.S. travelers are taking road trips.
More than 80% of Americans have summer travel plans, but fewer are hitting the road compared to last year. My guess is that rising gas and food prices have slowed many travelers down.
But it seems like New Yorkers just don’t care because 3/4 of us are gearing up and hitting the road. The survey had some interesting results with regards to the length of the trip we plan to take in the summer of 2024.
Most of us have no problem driving about 100 miles from home, which accounts for the majority of road trips. After that, the number drops to about 20% going 250 miles away and about 5% going 1,000 miles from home.
While we don’t mind taking road trips, air travel isn’t that appealing to us. Some studies show a decline in air travel this year compared to 2023. Last summer, 54% boarded a plane at least once, while only 52% plan to travel this year. It’s not a big difference, but it’s still a difference.
As I mentioned before, rising gas prices have everyone worried, so your plans may change before all is said and done. According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gas is $3.67, and there’s a good chance that will change, especially once schools are out and vacations begin.
The good news? Experts think that due to less travel, demand will decrease and prices may fall. That’s good news for travelers, but it’s not good news for businesses that rely on summer vacation travel for their livelihood.
As summer approaches, it’s important to plan your trip and take things like the cost of fuel into consideration. Plus, planning your summer adventure in advance can save you money, as prices tend to rise the closer you get to your road adventure.
So get ready to buckle up and make some memories this summer, New York style.
