My cat meows at the same time every night. Realizing why it brought me to tears
We all know that our pets have their own human personalities and quirks (my childhood dog had favorite TV shows and hated wildlife on screen).
But recently Reddit user u/AnonPinkLady shared a post on r/TrueOffMyChest that read: “I just realized my cat knows what a sunset is and he purposely tries to check them out every day and my heart can’t take it.” .
The post’s author shared that around 5pm every day, sunlight streams in through a large door that leads to her apartment’s balcony. (Presumably this changes with the seasons.)
“Like most cats, she loves the heat,” the poster shared. But “more than that, she will meow and look at us curiously, until we pick her up and hold her at eye level.”
The poster wrote: “She will extend her paws forward and rest them against the glass and look up at the sun as it begins to float below the city skyline.” Oh.
Cats have a sense of time
The poster was understandably moved by the realization.
“I think I just realized that my cat knows what time the sun sets and wants to look at it every day and that might be the most beautiful thing about her that I haven’t discovered yet. Help, why do I want to cry? she asked.
But it turns out that most cats have a certain sense of time, as anyone who can set the clock for their cat’s 6 a.m. cries for food will attest.
“Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are active mainly at dawn and dusk. This is evolutionary, meaning all cats do the same instinctively and naturally,” feline behaviorist Anita Kelsey shared with Metro.
They can also pick up context cues, like when you get home from work and when you turn on the kitchen lights, to set your internal “clock” — still, it’s cool that the cat in this poster uses it for reasons other than kibble. extra.

Yet another user on the site wrote: “You’re only human, it’s okay to cry. Occasionally I see little quirks in my cats and it makes me cry too.”
