Municipal leaders comment on the “challenges” that downtown businesses are facing

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – City leaders responded to some homeowners in downtown Roanoke who said they are facing challenges. After two job openings in as many weeks, companies listed some issues they say are affecting the area.

Brandon Stinnett is a partner at Laughing Bull in downtown Roanoke. He says the business has grown a lot in the last year since they opened, but says they’re still dealing with a problem.

“Right now, I think, I’m focusing on getting people here for dinner nights. I think that’s the biggest challenge,” said Stinnett, owner of Hangry Bull Dog Catering Co.

Other businesses that have asked not to appear on camera say their challenges range from what they describe as slow foot traffic, a lack of reliable public transportation and expensive and limited parking. It’s that last question that Roanoke Economic Development Director Marc Nelson says accompanies any thriving downtown.

“Any center you go to that is worth it, there are parking problems. If there is enough parking in the city center, it probably won’t be a center where you will spend a lot of time. What I think people really want is free or cheap parking on the street in front of any business they visit, and that’s difficult in a downtown like ours,” Nelson said.

According to those at Downtown Roanoke Incorporated, there are 3,500 free parking spaces on downtown streets, as well as 20 15-minute curbside spaces that allow for grab-and-go from retailers or restaurants.

Despite the differing issues, business district leaders tell WFXR News the downtown is still growing as they anticipate opening a fitness center and some additional restaurants this summer. DRI’s director of marketing and communications said companies have reported that sales are stable and that they are seeing increases, especially on weekends.

“When you look at Six and Sky and the fact that the old Clutch Spot is going to reopen, when you look at a lot of restaurants opening, the market building is packed for the first time since before the pandemic,” Nelson said.

Nelson says the general problems businesses face are not unique to the city center. The city is also helping businesses in the region find ways to alleviate pressures.
