Marvel Reveals Perhaps Too Much Information About ‘Captain America: Brave New World’

After the smashing success of Deadpool and Wolverine, I’m starting to get the feeling that Disney is a little less confident about how Captain America: Brave New World is about to perform in February 2025. They’re spilling a very of details about it to pique people’s interest, and much of this new information was revealed during SDCC this week when new footage was shown.

We’ve already seen the trailer below, which gives the impression, as Marvel has openly said, that the concept is returning to the “grounded” era of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was released ten years ago (ten years? It can’t be true), in 2014.

Among the new information, where I would say there are spoilers, are:

  • Harrison Ford’s President Ross talks openly about the giant Celestial in the ocean that’s been ignored since Eternals. It turns out the theories are true and it’s made of Adamantium, which will be the X-Men-centric metal’s debut in the MCU, and has many other combat uses beyond just being Wolverine’s bones and claws, hence the “arms race” to secure it, which we glimpsed in the original trailer.
  • We know who Giancarlo Esposito is playing now, that would be Sidewinder, who is the leader of the Serpent Society. In the comics, the Serpent Society was a roving organization of villains who worked for other supervillain groups or individuals like HYDRA and Kingpin. Here, they appear to be working for the Leader in Brave New World. In the comics, they have snake-themed powers. There are three different Sidewinders in the source material. The original was Seth Voelker, who had teleportation powers (what’s with that snake theme?). It’s unclear if Esposito is playing this Sidewinder or another. He did say he’s playing an “original” character, so perhaps none of the three existing ones.
  • Harrison Ford’s Ross is said to transform into Red Hulk during a speech at the White House, which you’d expect to be an accident, and a major event when revealed to the world.
  • Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader will be deformed through practical makeup effects and prosthetics, not CGI. “I really wanted to have the weight and the feel of the character and have the deformation of the character and have the other actors experience that,” he told EW.
  • Antony Mackie says Captain America: Brave New World has nothing to do with the events of The Incredible Hulk, technically the first MCU film, from 2008.

So, that’s a lot. Possibly too much. I’m excited for the movie, but I’m curious to see how it’ll fare as the first film without Captain Evans, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which acted as a sort of preview. But we’ll see soon enough.
