A man grieving a recent loss becomes frustrated with his girlfriend’s focus during a difficult time.
A man explained to Reddit his emotional attachment to a plant his girlfriend was asking him to get rid of. The original poster (OP) explains that he received the peace lilies after his grandmother’s death.
“I decided to take them home and discovered that they are one of the most toxic to cats, so they were on a three-foot stool in our room and the cats didn’t touch it,” he says. .
OP’s girlfriend is very concerned about the safety of the two cats and wants him to get rid of the dangerous plant.
“She already asked me if I would sell and I said no – it’s not negotiable. Then she asked if I would divide the plant in half and give the other half to family members. five hours away from family, and I don’t know how I would do that.”

OP suggested they hang the plant from the 9-foot ceiling, but that would require him to “constantly prune” it.
“She calls me selfish and says I’m not listening to her. However, I find it painful for me that she wants me to get rid of a plant that is very valuable to me,” he said, asking for opinions.
While people sympathized with OP’s loss, they noted that the plant didn’t belong to her grandmother, which weakens her argument.

“I don’t understand the big attachment to this plant. It’s not like it’s your grandmother’s plant – it’s just a standard funeral flower plant. A month ago, it was in a flower shop or a supermarket. It doesn’t look like a plant that’s good for cat owners. Having her is a risk,” wrote one commenter.
“It actually has no connection to your grandmother; it’s just a plant someone bought because she died. You’re acting like this is your grandmother’s plant and you have a deep connection to her.”
After people pointed out the difference, OP edited her post to admit she understood the point.
“Don’t think I don’t care about cats or live animals. I do. I lost my own cat a few months ago,” he wrote. “I think it was more the clouded judgment about having my first big loss in my life. I have never lost a grandparent before, or anyone else in my immediate family.”
