Longtime Ross science teacher killed in deadly accident
The Ross Township community is remembering Nicole Pelton, 52, a former high school science teacher who died Sunday in a wrong-way crash in West Chester, OH. Pelton has taught 6th grade science at Ross Middle School for the past 22 years. She is remembered by students and colleagues as an educator who brought enthusiasm and fun to the classroom. “Ms. Pelton was not just a teacher; she was a beacon of light in our school community, with a passion for sharing her love of science,” Ross Local Schools wrote in a letter to parents. Former student Olivia Gertin, 24, of Ross Township, described the longtime teacher as exceptional. She says Pelton’s 6th grade classes inspired her, in part, to pursue a college degree in science. Local Ross schools were scheduled to close Tuesday for teacher conferences, but the district opened the high school to provide grief counseling for staff and students. Additional support will be available when the school reopens on Wednesday, Ross school officials said in a statement. “As we mourn the loss of Mrs. Pelton, let us also remember the joy, curiosity and knowledge she brought to our lives,” Ross Schools said in a statement. Nicole Pelton and her husband, Patrick Pelton, were driving together when they were struck by a wrong-way driver on Cox Road in West Chester, according to the West Chester Police Department. The driver of the SUV that crashed head-on into the vehicle, Gregory Meyer, 65, also died. Authorities continue to investigate what led to the crash. A West Chester Police spokesperson said authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine if the driver was impaired. It is also possible that the driver suffered a health emergency, but authorities continue to investigate what happened.
