Katy Perry turns Harrison Butker’s controversial speech into a feminist, pro-LGBTQ message
Katy Perry just made some adjustments to her choice of controversial Benedictine College commencement address from Kansas City Chiefs Harrison Butker that made waves last month.
On Saturday, the “Roar” singer shared a heavily edited version of the football player’s comments, which the star remixed in honor of June Pride month.
“I fixed this for my girls, my graduates and my gays,” she wrote in the caption. “You can do anything, congratulations and happy pride.”
While Butker criticized “degenerate cultural values” like reproductive choice and working women in his speech at the Catholic high school, Perry’s editing made it seem like he was celebrating college women and the queer community.
Starting with snippets of the kicker’s original words, the video began with him saying: “To the women in attendance today, congratulations on an incredible achievement. You should be proud of everything you have achieved so far in your young lives.”
“How many of you are sitting here right now, about to cross this phase, and thinking about all the promotions and titles you will get in your career?” He continued.
Moving away from Butker’s lines about the “diabolical lie” of working women, Perry reordered her speech to say: “I would venture to guess that the women here today will lead successful careers in the world.”
Breaking down his words further, Butker’s edited speech continued: “I say all this to you because I’ve seen firsthand, how much happier someone can be by supporting women and not saying that most of you are more excited about your marriage . and the children you will bring into this world.”
“The path forward is bright, things are changing, society is changing and young and old are embracing diversity, equity and inclusion,” the remix continued.
Cutting the speech word for word to his final message, Perry’s edit ended by saying, “With that said, I want to wish you all a happy Pride Month. And congratulations class of 2024.”
Although Butker’s speech was widely criticized for his retrograde views, the footballer was unapologetic when addressing his comments – and the backlash – for the first time late last month.
“If it wasn’t clear that timeless Catholic values are hated by many, it is now,” he told attendees at the “Courage Under Fire Gala” in Nashville, Tennessee.
