India started well, defeating Ireland by eight wickets after rolling their opponents for 96 on a tricky and much talked about New York pitch, before reaching their low target in 13 overs thanks to Rohit Sharma’s fifty and the winning reverse scoop by Rishabh Pant.

Pakistanhowever, it began with a shock Super Over defeat to co-hosts USA, with Babar Azam’s men unable to chase down the required 19 runs in extra time after the teams had made 159 each in their opening 20 overs in Dallas.
Babar gave a frank assessment later, saying: “We are not playing well in fielding, bowling and batting.” Lots of room for improvement then!

Which side should win?
India are the bookmakers’ favorites at odds of around 2/5, not just because of the way the teams’ opening games at this event went, but also because of their immense strength in depth and the fact that they have won six of the seven completed games against Pakistan in every T20 World Cup, including during the previous tournament in Australia in 2022.

It certainly was, with Kohli’s unbeaten 82 off 53 deliveries seeing India reach their target of 160 off the final ball of the game in an extraordinary finish, with his team 31-4 after 6.1 overs and still needing 48 in the final 18 balls at a fascinating Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In the 18th over, Kohli pulled Shaheen Shah Afridi for two fours through the legs and hit another through extra cover, helping India reduce the 12-ball requirement to 31, while he smoked successive sixes off Haris Rauf in the 19th over – first with a sumptuous blow over the bowler’s head, then with a majestic blow over fine leg – when the order had become 16 from six deliveries.
So what happened?
Everything started! Hardik Pandya was dismissed by Mohammad Nawaz on the first ball of the final, breaking a stand of 117 with Kohli, and Pakistan became heavy favorites when India managed just three combined runs off the next two deliveries. The target was now 13 out of three…
So what was the late twist?
Nawaz losing his radar. The spinner bowled a full toss which Kohli hit for six and to make matters worse the toss was called no ball on high ground so India got seven runs. An exhausted Nawaz sent the next ball wide as India raced to three after Nawaz brought down Kohli from a free kick and the ball deflected to third. Two by two are needed now…

And then what?
More drama. Nawaz had a friend of Celestial Sports Dinesh Karthik stumbled off the fifth ball of the over to drag Pakistan back into the game, only to then bowl another wide, this time down the leg side, to leave the score level with one delivery remaining. Ravichandran Ashwin proceeded to score the final ball at mid-off to secure a famous India victory and break Pakistan’s hearts.
Poor old Pakistan! Have they beaten India in World Cups?
Just once in the 50 and 20 versions. In the longer white-ball format, they have eight defeats from eight after last year’s horror show in Ahmedabad in which they sent their last eight wickets for just 36 runs to fall from 155- 2 for 191 in a game they lost by seven wickets.

So when did this victory happen?
Pakistan’s only World Cup success against India came in the UAE in 2021 and boy was it a big success – Babar Azam’s men triumphed by 10 wickets in the group stage of that year’s T20 final. India were restricted to 151-7 in Dubai before Babar (68no) and Mohammad Rizwan (79no) took Pakistan past that total with 13 balls to spare. The boys in green would love to repeat on Sunday.
