Donald Trump has hit back at George Clooney on Truth Social after the Oscar-winning actor published an op-ed for The New York Times in which he called on Joe Biden to step down as the Democratic presidential candidate. Clooney is one of several Hollywood names in recent days to call for Biden to drop out of the race against Trump. In his op-ed, Clooney said Biden has saved democracy before and could do so again by stepping aside and giving Democrats a better chance of defeating Trump.
“So now fake movie star George Clooney, who has never come close to making a big movie, is stepping in,” Trump tweeted in reaction to the actor’s op-ed. “He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are.”
“What does Clooney know about anything?” Trump asked. “He uses the Democrat ‘talking point’ that Biden, the WORST President in the history of the United States, ‘saved our democracy.’ No, Crooked Joe was the one who WEAPONED law enforcement against his political opponent, who created the most devastating INFLATION in the history of our Country, who embarrassed our Nation in Afghanistan, and whose crazy open border policy allowed millions of people to enter our Country illegally, many from prisons and mental institutions. Crooked Joe Biden did not save our democracy, he brought our democracy to its knees. Clooney should get out of politics and go back to television. Movies have never worked for him!!!”
Clooney, who co-hosted a major Hollywood fundraiser for Biden in June that raised a record $28 million, published his op-ed following Biden’s disastrous performance in the first 2024 presidential debate against Trump.
“It’s devastating to say this, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the ‘big F—ing deal’ Joe Biden of 2010,” Clooney noted. “He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
Clooney wrote that Democrats are “so terrified of the prospect of a second Trump term that we have chosen to ignore all the warning signs” regarding Biden’s aging.
“This is about age. Nothing else,” Clooney added. “But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president. Furthermore, we are not going to win the House and we are going to lose the Senate. This is not just my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator, member of Congress and governor I have spoken to privately. Every single one, regardless of what he or she is saying publicly.”
“Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024,” Clooney concluded.
Biden has maintained in the days since the debate that he has no intention of dropping out of the race. He is scheduled for a one-on-one interview with NBC News and Lester Holt on Monday, July 15.
