Doja Cat’s Met Gala towel dress recreated by Ikea in playful ad: ‘Brilliant’
Fashion and beauty
Doja Cat’s Met Gala couture is getting extra “attention” from an unlikely fan: Ikea.
The Grammy winner was photographed leaving The Mark Hotel in New York City on Monday night wearing two bath towels — one as a dress and the other balanced on top of her head — before walking up the Met’s iconic staircase.
The pre-gala attire raised eyebrows from home critics watching from their couches, with some comparing your Vetements look to an Ikea towelinspiring the Swedish home goods giant to reimagine Doja Cat’s ensemble with its own products, likely costing a lot less than cotton couture.
“You’ve met the newest addition to our line. Introducing the DÖJA Towel Dress,” she wrote Ikea UK on Instagram alongside the carousel of images of a model parading around an Ikea store dressed as the “Demons” singer.
In one photo, the tattooed Ikea model posed in front of a store pushing a designer cart wearing high heels and an all-white bath towel. Attached was a comically large care tag — similar to the “DRESS” tag seen on Doja’s chic swim dress — that says “DÖJA,” next to a cat icon.
On TikTok, the UK branch of Ikea posted a humorous video of the model chatting in an Ikea store, perusing the bath department and eating the store’s popular meatballs.
“POV: You have the Met Gala at 5pm and a meatball dinner at 6pm,” the brand wrote in the clip, which has racked up more than 19,000 views.
Instagram users were quick to praise the online conglomerate’s clever joke, calling it “brilliant” and “genius.”
“Give the marketing team a raise,” one person applauded.
“The marketing team works FAST,” commented another amazed viewer.
“I bet it’s a lot cheaper too,” one user wrote. (The FREDRIKSJÖN towel is just $14.99 on Ikea. The Crown Affair Towel, which the star wore, is $50 at Sephora.)
“IKEA channeling their inner @dojacat,” joked someone else.
After speculation about what her Met Gala look would look like — and days of teasers about her collaboration with Vetements — the “Paint the Town Red” rapper arrived in an oversized white T-shirt soaked in hair gel.
While some critics bristled at her nearly nude display on the star-studded carpet, she told Vogue livestream co-host Emma Chamberlain that she wore a white T-shirt because “cotton is the most used flower,” hence a “poetic choice” for the dress code for the “Jardim do Tempo” evening.
The wardrobe staple, she added, is “classic” and “timeless.”
