The idea that cats and dogs are mortal enemies has been around for so long that even dogs have come to believe it — even though, in most cases, this is not true.
A dog named Maggie has amused social media users after her owner shared a video of her looking confused about “what to do with a cat that doesn’t hate her”.
On Tuesday, user @olivia_tilley posted the clip, which shows Maggie lying on her owner’s bed next to the cat and nudging the feline as if she were trying to start a fight, before accidentally falling on the cat, who appeared unfazed by the dog’s antics.
The video quickly went viral on TikTok, receiving over 1.9 million views, 455,000 likes and 1,000 comments — with one viewer writing: “I love that the cat still doesn’t mind your loving touch.”
News week reached out to @olivia_tilley for comment via TikTok comments. We were unable to verify the details of the case.
Although dogs and cats that live together sometimes fight, studies have found that they can live together peacefully and even become best friends.
A study carried out by Italian scientists and published in the journal PLOS ONE found that more than 62 percent of the dogs and cats in the study who lived together also played together; 58 percent chased each other; and 41 percent fought. Nearly two-thirds of the pets sometimes played by “ambush” each other.

Another user commenting on the TikTok video wrote: “Maggie had a cuteness attack. She just couldn’t contain herself.”
“Be nice’… *WHAMP* I love wrecking ball races,” one commenter said.
“You know how cats scent mark things they like? Rubbing their face, cheeks, the base of their tail against things,” another added. “Was Maggie raised by a cat? Because that smack at the end really pissed me off.”
“OMG my 75lb German Shepherd would lose his mind if a cat didn’t hiss at him and let him come near,” one user said. “He loves cats.”
