Snip and Tip helps stray cats throughout Central Texas with the trap, neuter and return approach. Although the need is great, the work comes at a high cost.
KILLEEN, Texas – A Killeen-based nonprofit is asking for the community’s support to continue helping stray cats in Central Texas.
Snip and Tip focuses on this through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), educating the public and offering sterilization services to those who need a helping hand (or paw).
In 2024 alone, Snip and Tip claims to have cared for more than 1,039 cats.
“We do about 2,000 a year,” said Cody Cortain, founder of the nonprofit. “And this year, I think we’re going to hit the 3,000 mark, and that’s a big increase.”
While the organization claims each cat left “an indelible mark” on their hearts, they say the work they do is also expensive.
Cortain reportedly spent more than $40,000 this year.
“On average, it costs us about $50 per cat, and that’s just spaying and neutering,” Cortain added. “That doesn’t cover any of the history, medical, any of the transportation supplies, any of the traps, anything.”
Snip and Tip also reportedly lost its current premises in May and is now trying to find space for the cats elsewhere.
Cortain has two spaces in mind, but it comes with a hefty price tag.
“We are trying to get two separate spaces, construction projects, completed to house cats, one for feral cats awaiting surgery and then a separate space for mothers with newborns to breastfeed,” Cortain said. “At the moment, we are missing US$23,000 for this. We are trying to raise funds and get this paid off before I take out a loan in my own name.”
To help with the costs of their mission, Snip and Tip is asking for donations and help from the Central Texas community. The organization said it hopes to be recognized soon, especially with Temple’s new Human-Animal Support Coalition “on the horizon,” but said it will still have to scale back unsupported operations.
