Bucket List on a Budget: Travel New Orleans Without Breaking the Bank
TO ATTEND: Inside New Orleans’ 2nd Line Tradition
The Big Easy is a bucket list destination for fun seekers. With live music and jazz echoing through the streets, delicious French and Creole cuisine – serving everything from beignets and po’boy sandwiches to French 75 cocktails – there are plenty of can’t-miss activities in New Orleans.
But living in the Crescent City can get expensive if you’re not careful, so “Good Morning America” found the best way to enjoy the bayou area on a budget.
If you’re pinching pennies, below are all the ways you can still let the good times roll.
Getting there
Airfare prices to New Orleans, like most destinations, can vary depending on the time of year, but in early June, for example, round-trip fares from Chicago O’Hare International Airport can be found for less from $145 on Spirit Airlines and for $45 more — about $189 — American Airlines has similar flights that include carry-on bags for no fee.
Where to stay
Check hotel membership programs before booking your stay.
An IHG One Rewards account offers guests a slightly cheaper rate: A room at the Hotel Indigo, for example, costs $129 per night for members, $7 less than the regular rate.
Travel expert Clint Henderson, editor-in-chief of The Points Guy, told “GMA” that “among the perks you can get just by being a member of a loyalty program are free Wi-Fi, late check-out and even room upgrades.”
“In the case of IHG specifically, you unlock member discounts by booking through their website rather than an online travel agent,” he said.
Eat like a local
There’s no shortage of delicious restaurant options in New Orleans from legendary chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Nina Compton, but if you want to save money, check out the deals and find some places that locals love.
At the famous family-run Parkway Bakery, one of the city’s oldest po’boy shops and known for its fresh bread, visitors can enjoy a variety of huge stuffed sandwiches for just $7. And if you’re okay with the fillings and toppings, sharing a jumbo-sized po’ boy like the classic deep-fried Louisiana Gulf Wild Shrimp is just $7.70 each for two people.
Plus, May through July is peak crawfish season, and local restaurants like Clesi’s Seafood Restaurant & Catering offer an abundance of freshwater crustaceans for just $8.50 a pound. The restaurant offers weekly specials, as well as a $3 taco on Tuesday and free basket of fries on Friday, and offers customers a free order of fries seasoned with house-made garlic parmesan butter with the purchase of one pitcher of beer.
It wouldn’t be a visit to New Orleans without satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets. The renowned Café du Monde serves fried pâte à choux dough, dipped in powdered sugar, in orders of three for just $3.85 – but don’t forget, it’s cash only.
Getting around the city
Avoid taxis or ride-sharing apps and buy a Jazzy Pass to use public transportation for just $3 per day.
The card includes unlimited travel on ferries, buses and trams, providing a unique view of the city.
Listen to music
You’ll never miss a beat in the jazz-filled French Quarter. Entertainment is free, but don’t forget to pack a few small bills and tip your favorite performers while you enjoy the historic area.
The New Orleans Jazz Museum also offers free afternoon concerts Tuesday through Friday.
