He said that in Bollywood, stars still hold power on set and can often dictate who gets hired for a project. Recalling an incident, he said, “Before we finalized, the actor approved us. On big films, I went through a certain process and I was told that the actress doesn’t think you can do justice to…” Asked if he was rejected by a star, Oza said: “I got one night, a call from a producer saying that Maybe we would have to change the DP because the actress doesn’t like your work, in terms of you’re great, but you can’t do beauty lighting.
Oza said this happened at a photo shoot, just hours before he showed up on set. Eventually, the director put his foot down and defended him. But he admitted his ego was hurt. “At 7am, I woke up to an email from management telling me how I should light the actress. Of course, my immediate ego as an artist was hurt, but I calmed down and told myself that as long as I was getting my daily allowance, I shouldn’t be affected. I decided to play differently and obey the rules.” Oza said that on set he made a point of deliberately going up to the actress after each scene and asking if she was satisfied. “She understood,” he said.
Oza is known for films like Raman Raghav 2.0, Gully Boy, Toofaan and his work on the Prime Video series Made in Heaven. He is also working on the upcoming action film Yudhra and the much-delayed travel film Jee Le Zaraa. Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan is making his debut as a writer and director on the show Stardom, supposedly set in the world of entertainment. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, the series does not yet have a streaming home.
