Adoption

She is sugar, spice and everything good! Sugar is a deliciously sweet, small, chocolate-colored Min-Pin (Miniature Pinscher and Boston Terrier) mix. This six-year-old girl’s journey began under very unfortunate circumstances, originally rescued by the Shelter from a terrible breeding situation where she was used, neglected and discarded. After medical attention for being malnourished and dehydrated, this little survivor was later adopted… only to be returned to the shelter two years later due to her fear of meeting new people. This poor girl has been failed by humans her entire life… and now it’s time for her to find her happy ending EVER!

As a result of everything Sugar has been through, it takes her some time and understanding to be affectionate with people. The key to gaining Sugar’s trust is simple; a little compassion, patience and understanding. Sugar enjoys getting doggy treats, which helps her learn that there are good humans out there who are loving and want to care for her. This Sugar-Pie is very intelligent and loves to learn. She is also energetic and eager to please.

Sugar can become protective of her people; however, she will listen when she is corrected. Sugar would be best suited in a quiet home without other pets or children. Let’s get her story out to the world… if you’re not the right person for Sugar, you can still help by sharing her story on social media and with friends, neighbors and family.

If you are interested in meeting Sugar, please fill out an application and schedule a date/time to interact appropriately in a home environment, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. Adoption

*Special Request* Poppy is a 1.5 year old Cane Corso who came to the shelter as a stray wearing a worn out collar and unfortunately no one came to rescue her. Poppy has the cutest way of greeting people and smiles when she’s excited to see you! This little girl loves being out on the playground, playing with squeaky toys. Poppy weighs around 94 kilos, a true gentle giant. Life at the shelter hasn’t been easy for Poppy. She needs a foster or adopter ASAP as she is showing signs of kennel stress with weight loss. The shelter moved her to a quieter area to help relieve stress and monitor her, but she isn’t eating like she should. Poppy needs a home to call her own so she can grow into the confident, wonderful dog she is meant to be. At the moment, it is recommended for a home with teenagers aged 13 and over due to its size.

Lea Adoption

*Special Request* Meet Lea! This girl needs a special foster or adopter as she is almost completely blind. She came from a Neutral Trap Release, but her sweetness and special needs meant she couldn’t go back out. She is very adorable. Lea mostly sees shadows and would thrive in a domestic environment. At just 2 years old, she has lots of love and purrs to give to that special someone who will help her navigate the world.

If you are interested in more information about Poppy or Lea, please contact the shelter placement team at Adoption@hempsteadny.gov or call 516.785.5220.
