‘Not now, child. Mother is mother.

It’s the Mother’s Day episode, so “SNL’s “Saturday Night Live” brought in a “mom” to host.

Sure, she’s a mother of four herself, but Maya Rudolph, an SNL cast member from 2000 to 2007, is also a “mom.” Like, a legendary woman who kills and serves.

“You were the first to destroy the house, queen of boots!” says Bowen Yang. Rudolph agrees and starts a song – “I am your mother”.

“Not now, child. A mother is a mother”, she tells Punkie Johnson, who has a “message from gays: the monologue, is giving body-ody-ody-ody”.

This was Rudolph’s third time hosting SNL – his last appearance was in 2021. Alongside his final night was musical guest Vampire Weekend.

The New York indie rock band released their fifth studio album, “Only God Was Above Us,” last month. Led by vocalist Ezra Koenig, the band has won two Grammys and been nominated four times.

Cold open

Mother's Day 2024 Cold Open - SNL

Instead of the traditional cold open, the cast brought out their mothers to tell some jokes. But Kenan Thompson’s mom was excited about a regular opening this week to see who would play Stormy Daniels. Andrew Dismukes’ mom brings some baby photos, and Chloe Fineman’s mom prepared some jokes to criticize Tom Brady. Molly Kearney and her mother appear bald, and Ego Nwodim’s mother needs to find Lorne Michaels and thank him. Without him, who would Nwodim be? A successful doctor, perhaps?

Monologue

Maya Rudolph, also a mother of four, is thrilled to be back on SNL. Bowen Yang notes that she is not just a mother – “You are a mother. You were the first to destroy the house, queen of boots! Queue a musical number, with Thompson as MC. “Ladies and gentlemen, gays and them, I give you the Mother of the House of Rockefeller!” In a jumpsuit and with a crew of backup dancers, Rudolph sings about her various movies and ballroom-style SNL sketches where she proves she’s a “mom.”

Hot girls with Beyoncé 2

Hot girls with Beyoncé 2 - SNL

Beyoncé is back on Hot Ones with Sean Evans after a disastrous appearance three years ago where she struggled with the sauces. But she’s back for a second try. “That was the only thing I tried and didn’t kill, and it bothered both me and my husband. My husband is Jay-Z.” But everything goes as well as expected. “I’m about to start speaking in tongues,” she says after a particularly spicy wing, before asking her assistant (Thompson) if he can replace her bones with bones that aren’t on fire. “Why is this hot wing show the one thing Beyoncé can’t do?”

Please do not destroy – Explore page

Please Don't Destroy - Explore Page - SNL

The Please Don’t Destroy guys are with their girlfriends, who decide it would be a fun game to show each other their Instagram exploration pages. But the boys’ algorithms are just videos of Uneesa Confidence (Rudolph), an “online girlfriend for young people with self-esteem issues.”

Professor PSA

Professor PSA - SNL

We’re coming to the end of another school year and teachers have a PSA for the kids: “You won.” COVID has broken something that can’t be fixed, so teachers are quitting. Rudolph’s student said she had a “weird neck,” and James Austin Johnson recently found children cooking roast chicken in a urinal. “From all the teachers to those rude, clingy, illiterate kids, we gave up.”

British cavemen

British Cavemen - SNL

Nat Geo airs a special called “British Cavemen” because cavemen roamed all over the Earth – even places you don’t even think about. The cavemen speak gibberish that sounds very similar to modern-day British accents, and one of them even utters the first modern phrase when he is burned by fire: “How hot, isn’t it?!”

Vampire Weekend played “Gen-X Cops” and “Capricorn”, both from their most recent album, “Only God Was Above Us”.

Weekend Update: RFK Jr.'s Brain Worm - SNL

Colin Jost and Michael Che cover some of the week’s top stories, like Stormy Daniels’ court testimony, the Northern Lights, RFK Jr.’s brain, a new Lord of the Rings movie, and the Met Gala. Heidi Gardner appears as “a woman who insists she’s not mad,” and Sarah Sherman is, you guessed it, RFK Jr.’s brain worm.

Coffee Commercial

Coffee Commercial - SNL

Rudolph is a famous actress and diva who is filming a commercial for Tip Top Coffee. She loves the product and has never had coffee before. “My doctor said, ‘no’.” She goes more and more off the rails as the recording progresses, forcing the crew to leave and overindulging in coffee.

Nurse Appreciation

Nurse Appreciation - SNL

It’s Nurse Appreciation Week, so nurses are sharing what they love about their job. Some love seeing babies born or seeing a patient overcome adversity. But two nurses (Nwodim and Rudolph) are not so enthusiastic. “90% of my job is cleaning a grown man’s cake,” says Nwodim. “Listen, if you can do any other job, do it.”
