Schultz said the high-speed passenger ferry is the first of its kind and the only one of its kind in the United States.
MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Lake Express kicked off its 2024 season with its first trip across Lake Michigan on Friday. And while it’s still spring for some, Lake Express Senior Vice President Aaron Schultz said the start of the travel season almost feels like the start of summer to him.
“We’ve already had a great turnout,” Schultz said. “Lake Express is unique in the country, but familiar here at home.”
Schultz said the high-speed passenger ferry is the first of its kind and the only one of its kind in the United States. He said his favorite part of the ferry is seeing Lake Michigan.
“I think we’ve gotten used to it a little bit,” Schultz said. “But when you’re in the middle of the lake, you see this weather changing and you’re bathed in this blue and all these incredible things happening. This morning we had a sunrise and we had a kind of fog that lifted.”
Schultz said the views from the ferry across the lake are much better than what you can see from the highway.
“I don’t think you can put a price on it,” Schultz said. “Instead of looking at the taillights or, you know, saying we’re there. You’re wandering around, you can go out and you can come in and spend time with your family, eat something, relax, play a game with your kids at the table. , have that freedom, but I think the Lake Michigan experience is why people keep coming back.
And people have been coming back for almost 20 years. June 1st will mark the 20th anniversary of the ship’s first voyage.
The Lake Express makes four trips around the lake every day. The first of them leaves at 6am. On select days this summer, the ship will make six crossings with the addition of some night crossings.
